
On 25 February 2010, the year’s Design Indaba Expo was officially opened at the CTICC on Cape Town’s foreshore. Later that evening, buyers, exhibitors and Conference attendees headed to the Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock to kick off the country’s biggest design weekend in style. Fashion label The Inoue Brothers was founded in 2004 by real-life Japanese brothers Satoru and Kiyoshi Inoue, who were born and raised in Copenhagen. Their design/art studio takes Japanese sensibility and merges it with Scandinavian simplicity. They call it Scandinasian design. From 22–24 January 2010 the second annual South Ink Exposure (SIX) event had the Cape Town International Convention Centre abuzz with a vibrant mixture of needles, brightly-coloured ink and equally colourful people. On both 22 January and 23 January, SIX hosted raucous rock ‘n roll shindigs in Cape Town to celebrate all things ink related. While Friday night rocked out Mercury Live, Saturday night packed out The Assembly. The one small seed tv crew was on hand to capture all the action and this is what they saw.
Cape Town hip-hop rap outfit ETC Crew cross every dimension of the genre and are fuelled by a jazzy frenetic energy that has the whole city head-nodding along. The group is White Nite, J-Filter, Emcee Logical and Bonsai Bush – four men renowned for their mixture of dope beats and contagious rhymes. The names behind Cape Town-based, multi-dimensional rap outfit ETC Crew are White Nite, J-Filter, Emcee Logical and Bonsai Bush. Known for their slick combination of dope beats and addictive rhymes, single ‘Jozi Okes’ is a contagious comedy track. Off their album What’s in a Name?, the track is a tumbling farce that pokes fun at Johannesburg cool cats. The video was directed by Jenna Bass and upcoming artist based in Cape Town.
The infamously musical suburb of Bellville has once again let its latest export loose on the country’s gigging circuit. But instead of tourniquet-tight skinny jeans and paper-straight hair, they’re offering up the ‘original donker, dodgy Afrikaans rapper’, Jack Parrow. Although by no means SA’s first Afrikaans rapper, he’s making a name for himself from the Platteland to the Mother City Bowl. Check out this video for his latest single, ‘Cooler as Ekke’.

Through sweltering hot days and frosty nighttime temperatures, the musical madness was unstoppable and the festival was a massive success. The one small seed tv crew was on hand to capture all the action onstage and to chat to bands backstage after their sets.

On 30 October 2009, iconic sportswear brand Puma held a massive party in the heart of Woodstock, Cape Town. Hosted at Whatiftheworld and The Albert Hall, the Rudolf Dassler Presents Music Machine event was an incredible party with local DJ legends such as Richard the Third and P.H. Fat taking to the decks in celebration of music and threads. The one small seed tv crew was on hand and captured all the fashion and music that night for those who couldn’t make it.
Indie pop-and-grind rockers New Holland launched their second album, Exploded Views, in September 2009 at a down-and-dirty party in Cape Town. Held at the House of Rasputin, the gig featured a live performance by the band, the club’s exotic ladies and a generous helping of the Cape’s most in-the-know crowd. Van Coke Kartel – side project of Fokofpolisiekar’s Wynand Myburgh and Francois van Coke – formed in 2007. In the two short years since they exploded onto the South African gigging circuit, they’ve become a massive hit with SA’s head-banging and hip-swinging youth, playing gigs from the Mother City straight through to Pretoria. With two albums to their name, ‘Voor Ons Stof Word’ is the newest track and will be released on their forthcoming album, Skop, Skiet & Donner.
On the 29th of September 2009, aKING launched the music video for their latest single, ‘You and I’, off their second album, Against All Odds. The launch took place at an exclusive gathering at Fly on the Wall’s studio on Roeland Street in Cape Town. one small seed tv was there to witness the crowd’s reaction to the unveiling and chat to the band members. We chat to industry professionals about their careers and their passions, discovering the talent our country has on offer. This week we speak to Brendon Bussy, an electro-acoustic artist who is intrigued by auditory experiences. He experiments with creating music, listening devices and even his own instruments. Although he appreciates traditional instruments, it’s the more unusual sound devices that fascinate him, the instruments that are crafted from immediately available material.
