Every week we compile a selection of music to sing you into the weekend and list them in a post called #bottomrightcorner. Sometimes new tunes, sometimes themed tunes and sometimes we ask a music aficionado to choose the tunes for us. Since we’re getting towards the end of the month which often means end of the funds, we decided to choose some quality music that — with the artist’s permission — is downloadable for free! From a totally danceable club track by Ryan Hemsworth to a hauntingly wistful tune by Inga Copeland and a 48:05-minute-long exclusive mix by Standish/Carlyon, there’s something in this treat of a playlist for all sorts of human moods.

Ryan Hemsworth – ‘Perfectly’

Canadian-producer Ryan Hemsworth has just released a seven track EP, which you can download for free via his website. This is ‘Perfectly’, a hip-hop-hinted electronic track with a subtle chirp that makes it a safe choice for any panic-struck DJ who needs to get his dancefloor bouncing.

Inga Copeland – ‘Light Up’

Equipped with a beautiful voice that exudes an air of mysterious foreboding, the Russian-born Hype Williams-member with a fervour for anonymity manages to extract the listener from the seemingly all-knowing norm straight into the gloomy city streets of dubious melancholia. On her Soundcloud page you’ll be able to download six tracks from her recently dropped mixtape Higher Powers, featuring new and old tracks.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra – ‘Rà-àkõ-st’ (Lindstrøm cover)

The Norwegian producer electro-ized the mesmerizing tune ‘Swim & Sleep (Like a Shark)’ in a frenzied club-suited remix, which you can listen to here. To return the favour the laid back psych-rockers covered ‘Rà-àkõ-st’ their way, taking it off the crazed dancefloor and into a chilled-out living room. You can download it off their website in exchange for an email address.

Standish/Carlyon – ‘NEEDLE EXCHANGE 122: Standish/Carlyon’

This is a 48.05-minute-long exclusive mix by futuristic dub pop duo Standish/Carlyon and is downloadable in its entirety via soundcloud. According to self-titledmag.com it is ‘a mixture of humidity and colder tensions. [A] pretty all over the place selection/mix but hopefully it makes sense. TG members are unconsciously represented pretty heavily on this, though no Chris & Cosey. Next time. RIP Guru’.

Adam Martinakis | Digital Photo Realistic Surrealism

Combining the arts of digital imagery and surrealist manifestations, Adam Martinakis is a formidable talent in the world of computer-generated media. The Polish experimentalist is diversely creative with the ability to produce the virtual artworks of digital and graphic design, as well as the physical art of interior design and ceramic sculpture. Although technology is often perceived to be cold and robotic, Martinakis’s work is immersed in the exploration of the human condition, evoking a creativity that is at times chilling and at other times heartwarming. The surrealist imagery is juxtaposed with a hyper-realistic vision of the human world that transforms Martinakis’s stone characters into humane symbols of soul-wrenching emotion.

The visionary creator describes his work as a ‘mixture of post-fantasy futurism and abstract symbolism’, demonstrating that for Martinakis the future is a turbulent wave of human passion. The darkness of his imagery is tied to his futuristic techniques of 3D visualisation and photorealistic expression, which string together the threads of realistic creatures expressing themselves in a surrealistic dream-like backdrop. Although the UK-based artist has received numerous awards and exhibited all over the world, the hunger in his work and the originality spurring his imagination continuously develops his art into captivating journeys of the human psyche.

The inspiration is always internal, it comes form the inside and you carry it with you all the time. Artists are persons who carry they duty all the way with them. It is not really a job it is a way of living.

Nick Knight | Haute Death

Since his first foray into fashion photography, Nick Knight has ignited the industry with his re-conceptualisation of beauty. His bold looks and daring techniques have shaped him as one of the pioneers of modern photography. Knight’s entrance into the photography world has seen him flash through the editorials of Vogue, Dazed & Confused, W Magazine, i-D, and Visionaire, and his works have been commissioned by some of design’s most extravagant names including Christian Dior, Alexander McQueen, Calvin Klein, Levi Strauss, and Yves Saint Laurent. Knight photographs fashion in theatrical displays of fantasy. Haute Death is a roll of imagery that combines high fashion with the nightmarish dream-scape of dark fairytales and the opulence of Parisian sophistication.

Appearing in the pages of W Magazine, Haute Death is a whimsical homage to the shadowy, sinister illustrations of children’s literature. Using his trademark exploration into contrasts, Knight juxtaposes the delicate beauty of model Karlie Kloss into the eerie sketch of a Brothers Grimm fairytale. The result is an avante garde photo-shoot that mixes fashion and children’s fantasy. Kloss was styled by Edward Enninful into the couture designs of Dior, Givenchy, Chanel, and Iris Van Herpen to name a few. Haute Death is another example of Knight’s continuing challenge against the conventions of beauty and the re-imagining of fashion.

It is very tricky now to really, honestly call yourself a photographer because a lot of what I do doesn’t adhere to the rules of photography. For example, with the introduction of digital technology and the more frequent use of that in the creation of the image, you are really not following the rules of photography any more.

Coming Into Fashion: A Century of Photography at Conde Nast

Condé Nast — a magazine publisher that started with lifestyle and fashion bible Vogue — was founded in 1909 by Condé Montrose Nast. A century later, curator Nathalie Herschdorfer has decided to launch a book and an exhibition showcasing a 100 years of Condé Nast fashion photography — the medium which brought style to you and me. The exhibition opens on 15 June as part of the Edinburgh Art Festival and features 160 images of the early work of big names such as David Bailey, Cecil Beaton, Edwin Blumenfeld and Corinne Day. Viviane Sassen | In And Out Of Fashion

Lauded for her imaginative images, Viviane Sassen is redefining contemporary photography with her fusion of fine art, fashion and photography. Sassen’s rise to fame is largely attributed to her inventive photo-series of Africa for which she won the Prix de Rome in 2007. The success behind her work lies in her creative ability to alter the lens through which viewers perceive the world. While Africa is often photographed within the frames of hunger, violence, and suffering, Sassen’s imagery birthed a new vision of Africa as a dream-like fantasy. Her effortless mix of fine art and fashion is an inventive shift in the evocation of fashion and its relationship with art. Melding art and fashion into a coherent album is a difficult task, but In And Out Of Fashion is a striking performance of the seduction of fine art fashion photography.

In And Out Of Fashion is the summation of 17 years worth of work for some of fashion’s most honoured brands. Sassen’s images brush through the shelves of powerhouses like Stella McCartney, Adidas and Levi’s and onto the pages of Pop, AnOther Magazine, Purple, and Dazed & Confused. The book illustrates the visual aesthetic of Sassen’s photography as her models transform into fine art sculptures and their fashions become the threads of colour covering an artwork. Sassen portraits her subjects in unusual poses that simultaneously induce movement and the statuesque ambience of moulded sculptural art. Landscapes play as much a role in Sassen’s photography as her models, as she juxtaposes the colours and motion of her models against the shapes and hues of the backdrop. Ultimately Sassen’s work is an invigorating peek into the way in which art can re-envision fashion. Although she claims that fashion and art belong to different ends of the creative world, Sassen has seamlessly pieced together the parts of her fantastical puzzle:

Art photography doesn’t have to serve any purpose, fashion photography does, and that makes a difference. It’s a kind of puzzle that has to be solved

SEAN SULLIVAN | THE IMPOSSIBLE COOL

Sean Sullivan — a writer, photographer and director — collaborated with Russell Blackmore of Sonic Editions to curate a collection of impossibly cool, rare photographs found at the maximum security Corbis Archive at Iron Mountain, Pennsylvania — Jim Morrison, Martin Luther King and William S. Burroughs are just a few who are part of this exclusive club of class. The collection is limited to only 50 examples worldwide and all prints are hand printed and framed, as well as numbered and certified on the reverse. But more importantly, Sonic Editions uses the same printing techniques as fine art galleries, but by cutting out the overheads, and running slightly larger editions, they can offer the same quality of product for a fraction of the cost! Primed as one of the most thrilling film debuts of 2013, The Great Gatsby has hit South African theatres to a wave of excitement. To celebrate the release of the film Broaden A New Sound is bringing you IT DON’T MEAN A THING IF IT AIN’T GOT THAT SWING — A Throwback to Baz Luhrman’s The Great Gatsby. The event — hosted at Shikisha in JHB — is the unofficial after-party to honour the first week of The Great Gatsby‘s motion picture arrival, and we have five double tickets to give away!

The Great Gatsby — published in 1925 — is one of literature’s most prized legacies, and it has since become a cultural icon that has helped define the candescent charm, fashion and music of the 1920s. Now, in 2013, this literary masterpiece is being revitalised through the cinematic direction of Baz Luhrman with a stellar cast of Leonardo DiCaprio (Jay Gatsby), Tobey Maguire (Nick Carraway) and Carey Mulligan (Daisy) backing up the credits. The movie will keep audiences captivated for just over two hours, but the experience doesn’t have to stop there. F. Scott Fitzgerald said it best in the words of the novel:

Water Balance

It’s easy to forget to water your plants, but product design outfit Design Soil is making it easier for plant-owners to remember to feed their plants. Water Balance is a vase structure created by Japanese designer Risako Matsumoto for Design Soil. The shelf-like structure lends a new form of intelligence to plant-life, allowing the green shrubs to communicate with their owners. When the plant is perfectly hydrated Water Balance maintains even balance, but once the water has evaporated from the vase the structure tips to one side. The wooden piece is simple and and minimalist, making it an easy fixture to fit in any setting.

Grater Card

Business cards play a crucial role in attracting new clients. A boring business card could land in the trash, effectively pushing your company closer to the bottom, but a creative business card could help develop a brand’s success. Ad agency JWT Brazil tapped into this thought-process and created a business card that both reflects the business’s purpose and is usable to clients beyond being a generic piece of paper with contact details.

Bon Vivant is a Brazilian store that specialises in cheese. The shop teamed up with JWT to create the Grater Card — a light metal business card that can grate all kinds of cheese while giving important contact information for Bon Vivant. The clever card has become a viral hit in Brazil to the extent where the cheese connoisseurs have required customers to wait two to three days before asking for a new card. The handy card comes with a protective sleeve so that the grater remains as clean as possible before use.

Finger Paint Artworks

Iris Scott is a 28-year-old who creates fine art oil paintings with the tools of oil paint, surgical gloves, and her fingers. Scott began experimenting with fine art and finger painting while in Taiwan. The artist explains that during her stay in Southern Taiwan she struggled to captures her vision of flowers using brush techniques and started using her fingers instead, developing an entirely new aesthetic. As a result, Scott’s works have been commended for the hypnotic movement, sensory texture, and vivacious colours.

Selfridges Drive-Thru Shopping

Online shopping has been a rage for many years now with the advent of online stores like Amazon conveniently helping shoppers to purchase their goods from the comfort of their homes. Selfridges plays host to some of fashion’s most exclusive upmarket brands, and the luxury department store is now opening its doors to online customers. The new service is dubbed ‘Click and Collect’ and it allows clients to purchase their sophisticated pieces online and then collect their items at a drive-thru reception area. Selfridges has been on of the UK’s premier fashion retailers for over 100 years and their deep seated heritage ensures both quality and loyalty to customer satisfaction. However, like many well-established historical brands, Selfridges needs to adapt to the online marketplace and the developing world of new technologies. As such ‘Click an Collect’ is Selfridges’s attempt to occupy more space in the cyberworld. Although customers can buy clothing and accessories online, their purchase will be finalised once they have fitted their outfits and are satisfied with the results.

Tea Calendar

Some people love to start their day off with a cup of coffee, but others prefer a soothing cup of tea. If you belong to the latter group then you’ll enjoy Hälssen & Lyon‘s newly created calendar which is almost entirely comprised of tea leaves. Each day is a new bag of tea, and the leaves have been pressed down into wafer-thin tear-off strips that can easily be separated from the calendar and splashed into a cup of steamy goodness. The currently available calendars are being distributed as gifts for Hälssen & Lyon’s business partners and it is uncertain as to whether or not the calendars will be available for public purchase.

Waveskate

Living near the ocean is a definite benefit for people who love to surf, but for people who a crave a surfboard experience and are at the disadvantage of having limited or no ocean access there is little chance their craving will be satisfied. However, in an era where people are doing incredibly innovative and imaginative things, the lines between possible and impossible seem to be dissipating. Waveskate allows a surfer to ride the streets or waves as it transforms from surfboard to skateboard and vice versa in seconds. The Kickstarter project aims to create a high quality sporting equipment that serves dual purposes and combines the disciplines of surfing and skating to encourage more interaction between the sports as well as wider participation.

Louis Vuitton Shanghai Store

Louis Vuitton Shanghai has opened a new store in a commercial building called L’Avenue. The 24-storey building houses a basement, retail podium and offices, yet most impressively it resembles a giant shoe — a fit to Louis Vuitton’s presence in the building as L’Avenue is now the destination for Louis Vuitton’s largest flagship store. Jun Aoki teamed up with Leigh & Orange architects to create the structure which will feature as a landmark site in Shanghai. Environmental architecture is becoming an increasingly rising phenomenon and Aoki and Leigh & Orange have looked into previous works to develop L’Avenue with the ability to recycle rainwater for irrigation, reduced water consumption and incoporate green areas.

BITING ELBOWS | ‘BAD MOTHERFUCKER’

Ilya Naishuller — Russian director and frontman of the Moscow punk band Biting Elbows — has got the attention of Hollywood agents and received a ‘so well done’ Tweet by Oscar-winning director Darren Aronofsky through the band’s recent music video to ‘Bad Motherfucker’. Directed by Naishuller, and shot with an affordable GoPro 1 and 2, the video is an action-loaded thrill-fest that brings up a repetitive, ‘wow, how did he do this?’ in your head. (Length 04:57)
