aKING released their debut album, Dutch Courage, in 2008 and the album was rife with tongue-in-cheek hits and soaring ballads. At times sarcastic and at others dryly witty, the album cemented their place in the local rock scene. It was hailed as one of the best rock releases in 2008 and the first two singles, ‘The Dance’ and ‘Safe as Houses’, topped both varsity and national charts. The group’s second release, Against All Odds, will doubtlessly achieve similar levels of success.
The new album consists of eleven tracks which traverse the musical spectrum. The title track, ‘Against All Odds’, is a punchy ballad with strains of pop-rock echoing against frontman Laudo’s gruff vocals. The track’s the type you can nod your head to while tapping your toes. Conversely songs such as ‘Set Ourselves Up’ ache to the marrow with melancholy lyrics planted in powerful guitar refrains. The album is an eloquent mixture of aKING’s expected hard rock punctuated with surprises of soft, whimsical ballads. Although it’s a slight departure from the first release, it’s still a slice of musical genius that will keep fans pleased and win over new lovers too.
